Another Great Review!

TWO GUYS TOURS gets reviewed on Eventlist.org!

A New Stroll Through A Familiar Area

When I arrived at The Cube I was greeted very warmly by licensed tour guide Dave Ritz. Yesterday, being one of the coldest days in May thus far, only saw a handful of us make it out for this free walking tour around lower Manhattan. But a small group meant a more intimate experience. Ritz capitalized on this, pointing out the connections each member of the group had at the beginning, allowing us to feel we were all friends hanging out rather than individuals flocking behind a communal shepherd.

Half of the Two Guys Tours duo, Ritz, an actor and storyteller, felt that his passion for the history of New York and knack for performing to an audience were too strong to not share with others. His partner, Peter De Giglio, who I have chanced to see performing stand-up comedy at Penny’s Open Mic, is also a licensed guide and is currently designing their website and marketing campaign. They have been in business together since February, honing their skills with free tours mainly aimed at familiar faces. In the coming weeks they intend to grab a piece of the ever-constant stream of tourists looking for a guided perspective into the historic lower quarter of Manhattan, offering tours for around the price of a movie ticket.

Astor Place - Present

Astor Place - Present

Two Guys Tours focuses on the land below 8th Street, starting and ending tours at Astor Place, a one block thoroughfare that Ritz will quickly inform you was once occupied by the Astor Place Opera House as well as the site of deadly rioting in 1849. Yesterday’s tour took us on a loop extending down to Houston Street. Living in and being from Brooklyn, I have often walked the streets we would be treading on, yet as I noted to a tourmate, New Yorkers, unlike tourists, rarely look up and appreciate the beauty and wealth of interest our city has to offer.

Although a little unpolished in delivery, Ritz knew his stuff; he was rattling off dates and seemingly remembering too much information at times, occasionally veering onto tangents that utilized his storytelling ability and kept things interesting. An added touch was Ritz’s personal connection to some of the stops along the way. Having someone generically tell you CBGBs was a breeding ground for rock bands isn’t as fulfilling as hearing about the time they went to see The New York Howl play there. Also earning Ritz his credibility of living the experience was the stop at the Bowery Poetry Club. While being told the history of this young but well known institution some artists on a break outside spotted our guide and exchanged pleasantries. Ritz’s performing background provides an insider look to this arts heavy area.

Overall the tour was a success. I came away knowing much more than I started with. I would recommend this tour to New Yorkers and out-of-towners alike. Two Guys Tours provides a look at New York’s past (from the late 1700s to two years ago) from the point of view of a warm and friendly staff who are connected to the area.

Historic District Walking Tour:

Pre- Civil War Astor Place/ Bowery/ NoHo

"The Pre-Civil War Tour"

This is our latest and newest Historical Walking Tour. Come join us and walk the footpaths of the era before the start of the Civil War. Find out what happened in this recently designated Historic District over one hundred fifty years ago in New York City.

We'll show you where people lived back then and how they lived. We'll tell you stories and show you many interesting oddities and curiosities of those days. And, tell you tales of wealthy Yankee merchants and immigrant young Irish servant women. Tenements and Row Houses. Show you places where important political speeches were made. You'll walk right into and experience Nineteenth Century American History on streets you may already be familiar with. And learn how it all ties in, conflicts and relates with the City, State, Nation and World of today.

Our Walking Tour is very much interactive and we encourage our audience to ask lots of questions during the tour. And, we will also be asking our guests many questions and challenging them to think about history, architecture and culture. As history can often be off-beat, strange and irreverent one of our aims is to make you laugh and poke fun at old legends and myths. We, your guides, are both local performers, actors and storytellers who feel that the audience are always onstage with us. Every tour we give is a learning experience for us. We hope it will be for you, too.
